The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This
Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
