Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
